As we continue to get closer to GTA 6, Rockstar and Take-Two have taken another step in reducing how many multiplayer servers players have access to. Another's been taken down by the company, with the sunsetting process already underway.
The devs behind Rage:MP, a platform offering one of the bigger multiplayer options for GTA 5, have announced that Rockstar's parent served them a cease and desist. "Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have made it clear that FiveM is the only authorized platform for GTAV multiplayer modding, as defined in their Platform License Agreement (PLA)," the statement reads.
"In accordance with that policy, and at Take-Two's request, Rage:MP will begin a structured shutdown process," the team adds. "We are asking all server owners to wind down their operations and migrate to FiveM."
This first deadline for this process is June 1, when the publicly available list of servers is getting removed. It's advised that all server owners log in before then to make sure they retain the same level of access on FiveM once this change occurs.
Then the next deadline is August 31, wherein the lights go off on Rage:MP. Any servers not moved over to FiveM will go down as the platform disappears into digital nothingness.
If you're unaware of FiveM, it's a similar toolkit for setting up custom multiplayer within GTA Online, and it was bought by Rockstar in 2023. At risk of stating the obvious, the studio's parent Take-Two really seems to be closing ranks on unofficial outlets ahead of the sixth mainline game's arrival, as other, similar sites have gotten this same treatment.
It's a real shame, because some servers and players will inevitably choose not to move for one reason or another. Their work and that sliver of the GTA 5 experience will be gone forever, in the name of brand control. Pour one out for them, and if you're on a server on Rage:MP, make sure to get more sessions in while you can.
