Capcom attempts to patch Street Fighter 6's controversial incest storyline, but it's really not any better as Alex's wife is still his "distant relative" and basically a stepsister

Street Fighter 6 has patched the controversial storyline that saw Alex marry one of his relatives, but instead of getting rid of the relation entirely, Capcom has opted to make it slightly more vague.

Last month, Street Fighter 6 released Street Fighter 3 protagonist Alex as DLC, which in turn saw the game reach its new all-time peak on Steam, as clearly many were excited to play as what I consider to be one of the best fighting game characters of all-time. But soon after launch, players checked out his arcade mode storyline which revealed a really bizarre lore choice for the character.

Alex is an orphaned character, but was taken in by Tom – the best friend of Alex's father – who trained him and acted as a father figure for the wrestler. Tom in-turn has a daughter named Patricia. In Alex's Street Fighter 6 storyline, it's revealed that Alex and Patricia are not only married, but expecting a child together, which is already a strange choice considering they are effectively a pair of step-siblings… except this was made even worse by a reveal earlier in Alex's story where the character referred to Tom as "a cousin of my mom," meaning Patricia and Alex are also actually related.

Naturally, the Street Fighter fanbase weren't exactly keen at the reveal that their favorite pro wrestler was in an incestous relationship with a character who was effectively also his sibling, and Street Fighter 6 Takayuki Nakayama responded that it will be revised in a future patch. Well, the patch is out, and Capcom has confirmed that "some of Alex's World Tour story text has been adjusted in certain languages," in the patch notes.

And, upon launching the game, players found that Tom is now "a distant relative of my mom or something." So, instead of just revising the storyline to just have Tom's friendship with Alex's dad and subsequent father figure status be the link between the two, Capcom decided to just add a load bearing "or something" while giving the implication that Alex doesn't know how family trees work. If anything, "or something" just raises further questions, and as everyone on the Street Fighter subreddit points out, Capcom could have changed it to literally anything else.

The relationship between Alex and Patricia is still going to be a bit weird regardless considering they basically grew up together as siblings, but Capcom insisting on making them be actual blood relatives is the extra added wrinkle on top of how weird of a lore decision it is. And, instead of just easily removing that by making Tom a friend of the family or whatever, Capcom wanting to keep a hint of it in there sticks out as one of the most bizarre lore decisions the series has ever had.

Street Fighter 6 director says Shigeru Miyamoto is "a North Star guiding all game creators" and working with him on Zelda: The Minish Cap "shaped the way I approach game development."
