Destiny 2 fans are convinced that Bungie's community lead is trying to encourage them not to give up on the game, the idea of Destiny 3, or perhaps both as a series of cryptic posts fuel hopium about… something.
After almost nine years with Destiny 2, it's understandable that fans aren't taking the news of the game's final update well. That update arrives next week, and although the game will remain playable after then, it's been reported that Destiny 3 isn't in development, making for an understandably pessimistic community.
In the face of adversity, however, others are choosing to believe. Believe in what, exactly, is up to interpretation, but something good. As highlighted across Reddit and ResetEra, Bungie's principal communications manager Dylan "dmg04" Gafner has been turning heads on Twitter over the last day, first taking to the platform to write: "Guardians make their own fate."
This already had enough folks in his replies asking, "IS THIS A SIGN," but things were then taken to the next level by his following posts.
"Do not go gentle into that good night," dmg04 says, quoting the famous Dylan Thomas poem, before adding: "Wife walked down the aisle to Interstellar music. Top 3 movies of all time in this household."

There are a few ways that fans are interpreting all this – the first is that dmg04 is quietly encouraging the fanbase to keep fighting back against Destiny 2's impending death. One Reddit user suggests: "Dmg's posts are a battle cry. They hear us. Keep going. [...] A reference to one of the most famous poems ever about fighting death. It's from Dylan Thomas published in 1951. The poem follows: 'Rage rage against the dying of the light.'
"It's not cryptic and it's not cope. This is a message to the Destiny community that this movement is not falling on deaf ears. Save the Light. They are hearing us. [...] This is a clear signal from the people actually making and representing Destiny who love it as much as us. They want us to know that the movement over the past week is leading somewhere."
The alternative interpretation is a little more… creative. Though dmg04's explanation of him sharing the poem, which features in Interstellar, could well shut down any idea that he's hinting at anything to do with Destiny, others have been drawn to his apparently bold decision to include the number 3 in his tweet.
"Top 3 movies? That three seems very specific. Why not just, 'One of my favourite movies,' you're too smart for that to not be specific!" one fan responds. "This screams, 'how can I hint D3 without hinting D3.' Hahaha I don't even care if this is copium or hopium. Please let there be D3."
"WHY 3 HUH? WHY 3???? THE NUMBER DYLAN WHAT DOES IT MEANNNN," another questions. "WAIT a minute .... Interstellar ? Top 3 ? You posted those posts 3 hours after you tweet that guardians make their own fate .... Destiny 3 will happen and we will leave Sol !!!!!!!" speculates another.
Obviously, the million-dollar question is, will any of this end up meaning anything at all? Perhaps not, but at least it's giving everyone something to rally around in the meantime. Notably, he also shared someone else's post urging fans to log onto Destiny 2 on June 9, the day of its final update, which makes me wonder if he could be quietly encouraging the idea folks had about overwhelming the game's servers one last time.
As for the Destiny 3 theory, as one ResetEra user writes, it feels like it's up there with Stranger Things Conformity Gate as a theory that'd be really cool if it came true, but it's so off the wall that it's highly unlikely. Is that going to stop any believers from going all in on this idea, though? Of course not.
