The fan-favorite second edition of Arkham Horror is coming back with improved rules, all-new art, and totally different graphic design for the cosmic horror board game.
Revealed as part of developer Fantasy Flight's "Vault Series" that revives classic titles, Arkham Horror Remastered takes the long out-of-print second edition board game and gives it a drastic makeover for an October 2026 launch. While the visuals are different, its gameplay is still the same; the project has simply been "upgraded with new quality of life components."
While 2nd Edition Arkham Horror has been out of print for quite a long time, 3rd Edition is still widely available (you can find it easily enough at Amazon, for example). However, they're very different games; the more recent 3rd Edition is shorter and more streamlined. It's also well-liked, but isn't the same kind of experience.
Crucially, this game seems to resurrect Arkham Horror 2nd Edition's full suite of expansions. While the core experience is beloved, the complete collection has a reputation to match the best board games amongst cosmic horror fans. Unfortunately, we don't have any details on these expansions yet – but the fact even some may be included in the revival should cause a stir, because these are even harder to find in the wild than the core 2nd Edition game.
If you're new to the Arkham Horror franchise, it's based on H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. That means it's a cosmic horror adventure where you play investigators trying to stop cults or eldritch beings like the Old Ones from taking over. Expect a race against time and horrific, gribbly monsters that challenge your character's sanity as they grapple with concepts the human mind simply isn't equipped to comprehend.
As for Arkham Horror Remastered itself, this new version sticks to the same vibe but drastically updates (and improves, in my opinion) the visuals from that original game. It'll be familiar to longtime fans, but feels more high-budget and atmospheric. It also brings the visuals more in-line with modern Arkham Horror instalments or spinoffs like Unfathomable.
This project should land in October 2026, and we'll get more details soon via its crowdfunding campaign on Gamefound. We'll hopefully learn what other old-school games will be included in the "Vault Series" as well. Personally, I'd vote for a revamp of Star Wars: Imperial Assault. It's increasingly difficult to get hold of but still provides a great RPG experience like Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, complete with an ongoing story and character upgrades as you progress through the campaign.
