Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has been shot entirely on 70mm IMAX cameras – and now you can see the difference that makes before it even hits the big screen. In a neat new feature on the movie's official website, you can switch through different aspect ratios while watching the trailer.
The default setting is the IMAX 70mm format, but you can also switch to IMAX 1.90:1, 70mm 2.20:1, 35mm 2.39:1, Dolby Vision, and Premium Large Format. It's not hard to tell what the most impressive mode is either, with IMAX 70mm giving so much more visually. Give it a go here.
However, not everyone will have been lucky enough to grab a ticket to that or be local to the thirty 70mm IMAX theaters around the world. At least this will give you a taste of what it's like to watch it as Nolan intended, and probably one of the best features is that you can shift through them without interrupting the trailer as it runs.
Fans are also hoping that a physical release might include more options for aspect ratios when it releases. Replying on Instagram to the news of the feature, one wrote: "I really really really hope the Blu-Ray will also have a fully full screen format as with the rest of the Nolan movies with IMAX scenes!"
Now that would be a pretty cool feature. Imagine being able to switch through the aspect ratios as you watch the movie? Let's start petitioning for that now…
Star Matt Damon is certainly all-in on the formatting choices too, having declared that he thinks the Nolan movie might be the beginning of the end for this kind of filmmaking. "I don’t think people are going to be given the resources to shoot movies that way for much longer," he told GQ in a recent interview.
