Rumor: The Wolverine 3 will be an R-rated adaptation of Old Man Logan

It looks like Hugh Jackman's last appearance as the Wolverine will get some more blood on those claws. According to Den of Geek, the as-yet-untitled Wolverine 3 will go for an R rating and is at least a partial adaptation of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's "Old Man Logan" comics run.

Old Man Logan originally ran from June 2008 to September 2009 as part of the standalone Wolverine comic. It takes place 50 years into a dystopian future in which villains have conquered and divided up the United States, where Logan leads a quiet life as as a family man who has vowed never to use his adamantium claws again. The claws do come back out eventually, as you might expect, and they lead to some literally visceral scraps with old enemies, including stabbings, decapitations, and clawing-out-of-gutsings.

Since the original story was set in an alternate universe and includes several characters - like Hawkeye and the Red Skull - who may not be able to appear in a Fox production, Old Man Logan would need some tweaks to fit in with the X-Men cinematic universe. According to Den of Geek's sources, the decision to go for an R rating was made long before Deadpool broke records in its R-rated opening weekend, but it still must help.

Starring Hugh Jackman in his final appearance in the role, The Wolverine 3 will open in UK theatres on March 2, 2017 and debut in the US a day later.
