Suicide Squad is officially rated PG-13, so don't expect a bloodbath

The success of 20th Century Fox's R-rated Deadpool had many wondering whether Suicide Squad would follow suit, but Warner Bros producers have always maintained that David Ayer's supervillain team-up movie was aiming to be PG-13.

Now a new report on Box Office Mojo has made it official, as the MPAA have classified the film PG-13 for "sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, suggestive content and language".

The terminology used in that report makes it sound like Suicide Squad is going to push the boundaries of the PG-13 rating as far as possible, which doesn't surprise me. Films like The Dark Knight are a perfect example of how dark a PG-13 movie can be, so I don't expect the film will lose much impact. With that said, it will be interesting to see if Warner Bros and Ayer go the Batman v Superman route and release an R-rated cut when the film hits Blu-Ray stands in 2017.

Directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Joel Kinnaman, Suicide Squad will open in the UK and US on August 5, 2016.
