We knew that Kong: Skull Island was about the title character fighting monsters and would set up a battle with Godzilla in their own movie in 2020, but a couple of new clips from the film have finally made that connection clear. First up, we see Tom Hiddleston on the run from a monster fight between Kong and a new creature called a Skullcrawler:

Once you catch your breath, you can check out a much more subtle clip featuring Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman having a chat about what exactly is happening on this creature-infested island:

Goodman’s character reveals that he’s part of Monarch, the secret organization we first saw in 2014’s Godzilla, making explicit the connection we all knew was coming between these two franchises. Goodman’s hunting for proof of “massive unidentified terrestrial organisms” (remember “MUTOs” from Godzilla?) on the island, and that Skullcrawler from the first clip certainly looks like it fits the description. After a steely warning that the ancient forces who roamed the planet before humanity took over could easily reclaim that top spot if they want it, even Jackson’s stone-faced Colonel looks rattled. With a giant ape lording over the area and all sorts of mysterious Pokemon-inspired creatures running around, I can’t say I blame him.
