Deadpool 2 is officially moving forward with Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller

Well, this was inevitable.

Over the past few months Deadpool has struck a tone with cinemagoers, amassing a massive $757 million worldwide and becoming 20th Century Fox's highest-grossing superhero film to date. That meant a sequel announcement was a matter of when, not if, and the studio revealed that Deadpool 2 was in the works during their CinemaCon panel.

The studio co-chairman Stacey Snider also confirmed that Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller will be back for the follow-up, as will Deadpool screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. While story details are understandably scarce at this stage, thanks to Deadpool's post-credits sting we know that Cable will be showing up in the sequel (and will possibly be played by Keira Knightley).

It's going to be quite the challenge for Reynolds and co to top themselves with Deadpool 2; although there is now a huge amount of goodwill for the franchise, the novelty factor is gone. I'm excited to see them try though, and I'm even more excited for the sequel's inevitably awesome marketing. Now, if you'll excuse me...

Directed by Tim Miller and starring Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool 2 is yet to be assigned a release date.
