CVG: Looking for realism, EA Redwood Shores turned to the dead for help.
EA Redwood Shores came up against this problem making its sci-fi horror game Dead Space. On their first attempt, the team were not happy with their work. So, they decided to take a close look at some real bodies.
Writing for Edge today, exec producer Glen Schofield explains, "In the story of Dead Space, there was a war that happened on the ship before Isaac, the main character, gets there. So he's going to find a lot of nasty stuff, corpses in various states of annihilation.

"Sometimes, it's all about the pacing. Whether its romance, comedy or horror, the way certain elements are presented can change the entire package. For instance, if you try to pack all of the genre-dependent content into the first hour or final few of a product, it's going to be disappointing.
That's why Dead Space has been created with the intent of being "[...] a roller coaster ride, where you have those horror moments, but you also have those spaces in between to let down your guard. In fact, stopping to take a breath makes it even more impactful the next time we throw an encounter at you, or use a false scare to put you on edge," according to Rich Briggs, producer. He speaks the truth-getting that sense of false security has been my downfall in such recent games as Silent Hill: Homecoming, or even Alone in the Dark. Thinking that things are really okay when they're not, can sometimes be the most horrifying frame of mind."

"All jokes aside, after a recent interview conducted with Dead Space Producer Rich Briggs, it's been made perfectly clear that there are no current plans for multiplayer support for the upcoming survival horror scarefest. Many gamers have been asking this question, including myself. One nameless Ishimura crew member versus their friends, as Necromorphs? It seems like it'd work in theory, and would be a welcome addition to a game that looks better and better with every bit of footage revealed. However, it's not merely for the reasons one would suspect-the game isn't fit for such a mode, it wouldn't work, etc."

"As we've seen in terrible American remakes of Japanese horror film classics (The Grudge, anyone?), it's obvious that filmmakers always want to use music and sound effects to their advantage when attempting to scare the pants off its audience. However, after such banal usage in 99% of the horror films released throughout the years, it tends to become familiar. When the music swells in a horrifying tidal wave of strings and accompanying instrument, we're all ready to jump in our seats, expecting to be afraid of whatever's coming out onscreen.
The creators of Dead Space are looking to put these tactics to good use, once and for all, throwing in the spice of actual silence to instill fear and to get our blood pumping, rather than forcing music to do the job through the entirety of the game. Ominous music has become an extremely overplayed option and a cop-out when certain games' content isn't chilling enough to carry the fear factor."

CVG reports: "The first verdict for EA's impressive survival horror game is in - and the score should keep fans excited. The latest Xbox World 360 mag, on shelves today, awards the survival horror game 91%, claiming that Resident Evil developer Capcom should take note, "Because EA can teach them a thing or three about survival horror."
