I'm going with Carl Johnson for my favorite main character seconded by Nico Bellic. Tommy Vercetti talked too much and with an annoying voice. Claude was ok because he didn't say a word. That biker guy was too depressing. Luis just plain sucked.

What about GTA 3's Claude? I always thought he was damn cool.

Brucie because I actually find him to be one of the GTA world's most developed characters masked by his insanity. Luis from The Ballad of Gay Tony was probably the first straight up "video game protagonist" in a post-GTA3 game. I don't remember him going on about how much life sucks or how horrible wars are. His biggest gripes were just what a pain in the ass Gay Tony was to him and how much his mother hated him or something. Murdering, kidnapping, and bank robberies aside, I know too many guys like Packie McReary that I drink with, so I definitely took to him right away. Donald Love (GTA3) is probably the most normal character in the entire series next to Kate McReary, but he was a kickass businessman and he was voiced by the awesome Kyle MacLachlan so I loved him.

Ken Rosenberg the lawyer that is always down on his luck. Avery Carrington the real estate developer voiced by Burt Reynolds. Johnny Klebitz, and everything going to hellr around him. GTA has had a great cast of supporting characters.

I have to go with Fernando Martinez. "I...I just die in your arms tonight...it muss've been something you say..."

Does Jimmy Hopkins count? I guess not. In that case I'd have to go with Tommy Vercetti; ably voiced by Ray Liotta.

My favorite would easily be Claude the protagonist of GTA 2

No love for Niko? By far the most well developed character in the series imo
  • mothbanquet - October 20, 2011 8:44 a.m.

I liked Niko but he was awfully contradictory. He was awfully easy with being a thug and murderer for a man so supposedly haunted by war and death. 'Least Tommy Vercetti knew what he was and never tried to kid himself (or us) that he was anything else.

  • joabbuac - October 20, 2011 3:22 a.m.

    Tommy Vercetti all the way....badass
  • Redeater - October 20, 2011 5:07 a.m.

100% yes. Where the hell is he on this list? CJ was a boring cardboard cut out next to Tommy.
  • inkyspot - October 20, 2011 2:50 a.m.

    Loved CJ and Lazlow also.
