Who Is Dayani Cristal? review

Truth is stronger than fiction in Marc Silver’s divided documentary, which pairs a procedural investigation into the identity of a deceased migrant with road-movie-ish footage of Gael García Bernal tracing the man’s deadly trek towards the US/Mexican border.

Bernal seems sincere but he’s playing a role he can step out of, which distracts from Silver’s deeper ambitions: to humanise and anatomise a heated political issue. This latter is mostly achieved to heartbreaking, harrowing effect through interviews with family and forensic specialists, whose job – identifying corpses – positions them to expose the awful human price of US immigration laws.
