What happened to story mode? - Super Smash Bros. Wii U Weekly

A few weeks ago, the developer of Super Smash Bros. Wii U confirmed that the brawler wouldn't have a traditional story mode. Though Brawl's lengthy campaign was beloved, it was decided that this element wouldn't be included. What will it be replaced by? Well, we have some ideas.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U Weekly is GamesRadar's weekly Super Smash Bros. Wii U show. Yeah, we bet you figured that out already. Come back every Wednesday for the latest news, analysis, and speculation about the upcoming brawler.

I think it's a testament to just how good those cutscenes are that as soon as you showed it in the background, I wasn't paying attention to anything Coop was saying for its duration. I remember laughing hysterically as Captain Falcon dramatically concludes his entrance with that pose sliding into all of the other Captain's pikmin, killing them. I fondly remember actually firing up one of the cutscenes on a trip I was on with my buddies when we had hauled the Wii up to camp for some smashing in the condo we stayed in. It was the one where Fox goes head-to-head against Meta-Knight's Halberd ship... and then as a hail of lead hurtled toward his Arwing, all the guys in the room simultaneously cheered "DO A BARREL ROLL!!!" as Fox did an awesome barrel roll. And some of the scenes were quite impressive in their own right. I was astounded at how imposing that subspace cannon was, dwarfing the already massive ship belonging to Meta-knight. And of course it dun blew up real purdy like.

My caption: "You pick the most interesting places for a honeymoon." or "Not sure if this is an entirely prudent choice for a first date." Link blushes for an emotional moment before commencing a maniacal and unprovoked bludgeoning of the pilot, sending the plane into freefall...

When I first heard Sakurai's comments on a lack of a story mode, one of two thoughts occurred to me: 1. He's just BSing to cover up the fact that they lack the time to produce a full story mode and 2. Even if 1. is correct, that is one of the most asinine reasons I've ever encountered for not doing a story mode. How stupid does he think people are? I know Sakurai is an amazing developer and I certainly respect his work, but come on! You don't have to sugercoat it! If you didn't have the time we understand.... Anyways, I know the game will be awesome and we'll most likely see a story mode similar to what was in Melee. And Henry.....never stop floating. Let the haters hate~~~

I actually think it's possible he was serious when he gave that reason. I could understand why he would put all that work in those awesome cutscenes and get upset when people just watched them online. Especially when the development of those cutscenes delayed Brawl, alot.

Even though Subspace Emissary was pretty fun, I felt once I done that I didn't felt compelled to play again. Adventure mode on Melee, on the other hand, I played several times with each character. For me the best would be a longer Adventure Mode, but unique with each character with several paths, so you can go back and get the secrets. PS: The Stickers will be back on this version? Trophies mostly likely, but stickers I'm not sure..

I want to see little Coop on Henry's shoulder as part of the actual episode. Also, I'm still hoping for a discussion about the music in the game... Caption: Link: I know this is great for sky diving Samus, but I still think your old gunship would be better for bounty hunting.

They'll have some sort of basic Arcade mode like they've always had, but I'd enjoy a character-unique one, like you guys mention in the video. Sad there's no Subspace Emissary, but as long as the game is fun, it doesn't matter. I put like 8 hours into Subspace, and like 300 into multiplayer so yeah, not a big deal. : p

Pretty much everyone on the SSB Miiverse community is arguing over Miis, Pac-Man, and Ridley. You should do an episode on them: Here's my caption: Samus: This is seriously the best seats you could get!!!!

There better be a story mode! That was why this is the best Wii game I ever played, this game alone justified my purchase of a Wii a few months after launch.

Caption: "Hey, i think I can see my house from here!" As for the story mode, I mostly agree with your statements. While Subspace Emissary was very interesting the first time around,

ctd. It got boring the second time through. It feels unnecessary. Sakurai even stated that he cut characters to complete it. As for his removal of cutscenes comment, I feel he feels annoyed that people are treating the cutscenes as rewards. You mentioned how cool those cutscenes were. They were but if you watched the cutscenes beforehand the specialness would be lost. That's why he makes the characters unlockable and made the achievement boards and the sheer amount of content and detail in each game he makes. Its a reward to the dedicated fans who play through the game. If you spoil yourself by watching, it makes the reward less special.

Honestly it also explain why the Dojo is inferior to Brawls To be fair, Brawl was spoiled ALLOT before its release. and really, the only thing i didnt like about Subspace were some design choices and the bland design sometimes. and hey, we still have those interactions cutscenes with Newcomers to promote smash during the development

I have this feeling that little Cooper and regular Cooper are bitter rivals.
  • Gingy111 - August 15, 2013 6:23 p.m.

Any chance since the biggest reason I'm hearing is a time constraint, that they do a subspace emissary esque DLC further down the line?
  • shawksta - August 15, 2013 10:39 p.m.

Who knows Sakurai filled up Kid Icarus Uprising and Brawl with A LOT of content that feeds players especially for those in a single Player only taste. Unless new smash is already brimming with content, we probably wont see anything on DLC
