Wanna get in the Gears of War 3 beta? Just buy Bulletstorm's "Epic" Edition

Even if you're not interested in Epic Games' upcoming game Bulletstorm, you may still want to pre-order a copy of the "Epic Version" of the game. That is, if you have any desire to get into the coveted Gears of War 3 beta. Anyone who buys the $60 Xbox 360 game will be guaranteed access.

We've seen this so many times now, it hardly comes across as a unique opporunity. Epic isn't the first to incite sales of a lesser-known game by offering exclusive content of an extremely popular AAA title - how many people do you thikn bought Crackdown simply to get the Halo 3 beta? - and it won't be the last.

Nevertheless, we expect at least some die-hard Gears of War fans to plunk down the $60 just to get beta access, without ever playing Bulletstorm. Of course, being that Bulletstorm is also a first-person shooter in a sci-fi setting, that it's from the same developer, and it looks legitimately kick-ass on its own, most people will probably enjoy both.

So aside from the GoW beta access, what else do you get for the premium price of the Epic Edition? You'll get a whole lot of bonus content, like 25,000 experience points right out of the gate, as well as upgrades and exclusive armor.

Now for the question everyone wants to know - when will this beta get underway? Unfortunately, Epic isn't giving away that information yet. In fact, it's not saying much at all, except some PR speak like this: "With these two highly anticipated triple-A experiences comes a unique opportunity to do something to really excite players, and that's what we intend to accomplish with the support of Microsoft Game Studios and EA. This is for the shooter fans."

Bulletstorm comes out on February 22, so expect the GoW 3 beta to come out well after that. Epic says beta details will be on the Epic Edition packaging, "if and when available."

@KaiokenKid I see. Same developer. Promoting their game. Obvious really, I'm a little embarrassed.

Isn't 60$ the standard price for a new cosole game?

I bought Crackdown because I thought it looked like a great game... and I was right. The Halo 3 beta got used once or twice then I set it aside for the infinitely funner Crackdown game. HOWEVER, I like Gears of War and I think Bulletstorm looks insanely fun so I'll be grabbing this for both.

Are you sure you have to buy Bulletstorm to get access to the beta? Because in the statement released by Epic they said that you have to buy Bulletstorm to get EARLY ACCESS to the Gears 3 beta... so I'm thinking that there will be another way to get the beta, it just won't be as early. I might just be misinterpreting that though.

Super excited for both. Personally, Gears of War is one my favorite franchises to come around this decade, aside from Halo, Mass Effect, BioShock, Fallout, and, I guess, Elder Scrolls. Not much of a "series," though... At any rate, Gears still holds my crown for best shooter franchise to date, with epic storytelling, and amazing backstory (if you've read the novels. Highly recommend, Karen Traviss is an amazing author). And ever since reading about Bulletstorm, I've been eager to hear and see more. And from what I've seen recently, I can't honestly wait to play it! Good thing Dead Space 2 will keep me occupied well beyong February 22. Keep the info coming on both the BETA and Bulletstorm, please!

@Cosmicshambles Well, Epic is a dev thats rather closely tied to microsoft over years, and they have a big Exclusives coming from them next year. (them being Epic and the Exclusive being Gears 3) so really, this isnt a surprising thing. Atleast this time the dev is atleast the same between the Game the beta is tied to and the game thats being betad. With Halo 3, they put it on a game that didnt even come from bungie. Hoping they take the time to do the PS3 version fo Bulletstorm right though. UE 3 is a engine that can work well on PS3, but its also a engine that cant and I dont know how much experince these devs have with PS3 tech.

How does this kind of thing work? I mean, do they just slap the beta on some old crap that just wouldn't sell otherwise? Or do they add it to a game they know will sell well to create buzz for GOW3? And who is they in this instance anyway? Microsoft? The developer? I'm confused. WHAT DOES IT MEAN? ... I'm buying it, obviously.

I dont think thisll have the same effect that Halo Beta in Crackdown did, but it should deter some people to buying the 360 version over the PS3 version if they have the choice. Me personaly, not a big fan of online multiplayer, so not that pumped for this.
