The Secret World is less of a secret. New trailer released

The Secret World is less of a secret. Today, developer Funcom released a new trailer for the mysterious and unique MMO. Set during the modern day, The Secret World sets itself apart from the usual fantasy and sci-fi trappings common in most MMOs. But the game will also eliminate levels and classes – another sacred cow of the genre. Being able to “build the character you want to play” seems to be the main mantra of the game’s development team as part of an attempt to move away from tiresome grinding and character restrictions.

Although this isn’t the first time we’ve seen gameplay footage for The Secret World, today’s video features the most footage of the actual game in action. If you haven’t already seen them, the all-CG teasers for The Secret World that released in 2009 were pretty badass. Check them out below and have a look at our most recent preview of The Secret World for more details.

The Secret World is scheduled to release sometime between 2011 and 2012 for the PC and Xbox 360.

this looks quite good. Looks like it is trying to set itself apart and doing it well. Might actually be an MMO worth playing.

Sure it looks great and it has good ideas, but did you see that part of the trailer where one of the mutant/troll thing was standing right beside one of the players. The player runs up to the troll 'thing' with a sledgehammer, and the 'thing' is carrying a machine gun thats twice the size of a normal human. The 'thing' unloads a machine gun THATS TWICE THE SIZE OF A NORMAL HUMAN into a NORMAL HUMAN'S face, and the human is like "Oh no, there goes 5 hp." You cant really have a game that uses hammers and shotguns and really expect gamers to be like "Oh coolz, I could use gunz or hammarz!" Then when you get your level one shotgun and somebody gets their level one sledge, and they both do around the same damage to the level one bunnies/zombies, you realize that freedom is a lie and all the game is just numbers. Instead of a shotgun it could have been a Pillow Launcher of Fluffy Doom, and it would have done the same damage. WHOA! WTF! Where did this rant come from?

I like how they listed New England amongst the other magical locations, Egypt and Transylvania.

I love Funcom just for The Longest Journey. I can't wait to see how this game turns out but I agree that they'd better show us more by now.

Now I'm going to be disappointed when I don't have COMPLETE freedom over my character and actions. No but seriously, this excites me.

I don't see how they will be able to ever get away from levels or classes. Basically there will be specializations that probably won't work with other specs. Does it look great? Oh hellz yeah. But just like ToyMonkey said, I'm not impressed by trailers anymore. They look fantastic but gamewise I have to see some ingame stuff.

the worlds looks really cool and fun to play in, and the idea of playing as secret societies is interesting. but the playable characters designs are kind of boring looking. i hope they have a good level of customability. we'll see...

Does anybody know if there will be a beta for this any time soon? I am very intrigued.
