New Tomb Raider prequel announced

Square Enix has recently announced plans to publish a new Tomb Raider prequel, which will tell the origin story of one of gaming’s most famous heroines, Lara Croft. "Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider, we are exploring things that have never been done before in this game," says Darrell Gallagher of development studio Crystal Dynamics This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other."

The announcement also comes with a brief description of the premise for the upcoming prequel:  ‘After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive.’

Also included with the announcement were several logos, as well as a snapshot of the January 2011 cover for Game Informer magazine, which will feature a 10-page story on the new game. The announcement did not include official details concerning an expected release date or what platforms the upcoming prequel will release on. We have contacted Square-Enix for further information.

The whole point of the game was a action heroin who is a women. Its a game where you can kill ppl and learn new things about history. Forget about the damn big boobs. I'm a women and its kind of annoying that your just going on here saying. No boobs no buy. SHE HAS BOOBS!!!! This girl is 21 years old. and YESH THE GIRL IS SEXY. THat doesn't mean she has to wear short shorts and big ass boobs. THis is an ORIGIN not the 30 year old Laura croft. Damn!

I have always been a fan since I was a kid, my dad always played them and he got me into them, I've played every game that has come out, so I will get this one when it comes out, I cant tell if it will be good or not, but I'm willing to give it a shot and if its not good then hey, no problem, I can always sell it at gamestop if I dont ever want to play it again. I am glad they are re-doing the franchise though and hopefully better gameplay than all the rest, they were good but I did have a problem with the controls and such.

I hope the game has more harder puzzles to solve and more action then the last ones.

Hmmmm... I wounder if people will bitch about Lara's new look like they did Dante's. I am in favor. She's purdy!

this sounds like a realistic take. I think its pretty awesome, even though Ill miss the old boobsy Lara. Just cut the brawling and exagerated shooting present in the new ones and we're ok. like the beggining of the series, more puzzle focused

Well I'll give it to Squeenix to pull off the gruff look. I thought she'd be Final Fantasy sparkling so beautiful Maybelline model, not that I mind, but imagine from the shipwreck came Yuna pop-idol from FF X-2. Of course if she's nude, demographic gamer will not give a f

I want to be excited, but I can't. Prequels are rarely good and Crystal Dynamics is repeating the same history as Core Design by making each game more and more buggy and less and less fun.

she does NOT look as appetizing as the new/present lara. at all.
  • 510BrotherPanda - December 7, 2010 12:06 a.m.

No thanks, it looks like what Ninja Theory was going to do to Dante: Rough them up for the remake.

Looks like someone had to be told twice to get back in the kitchen...

You know, I'll give them the benefit of a doubt. This does seem interesting. With a prequel they could use an established character, and completely recreate them. Do a Star Trek kinda thing. I just hope they make the series into a more mature franchise, instead of something made for bloody teenagers. Make it not about sex, but a strong female character. Yea, I have hope for this. ...wait, Square Enix is making it? Goddammit.

......Seriously????? .......SERIOUSLY???? Does anyone not remember that Angel of Darkness Reboot? Christ can I please just have a decent sequel to Legends? That game was by far the best among the series.
  • ventanger - December 6, 2010 11:05 p.m.

How about a gritty Mario prequel that details how Mario became the battle scarred goomba stomping plumber he is today? Really? No? That's stupid too? Ugh. Tomb Raider doesn't carry nearly the reverence that these people think it does.

F*** this! I thought the January issue of Game Informer would be an Uncharted 3 reveal!
  • DecoyOctorok - December 6, 2010 9:59 p.m.

It's just disappointing because I hadn't played anything in the series since Tomb Raider 2 until Legend reignited my interest. I thought Lara's altered backstory was interesting and Crystal Dynamics did made her a much more interesting character than she was in the Core days.
  • batmanboy11 - December 6, 2010 9:58 p.m.

So they think people care about the stories in the Tomb Raider games then?
  • Jaces - December 6, 2010 9:52 p.m.

I've always been a TR fan ever since laura made her debut. Admittedly they've gotten worse aside from Legend and Underworld which I enjoyed but really wasn't anything new. Here's hoping this "origin story" is able to jumpstart the series. I guess I'm one of the few who still enjoys the Tomb Raider games. ;P
  • DecoyOctorok - December 6, 2010 9:45 p.m.

Damn it Crystal Dynamics! The series didn't need a reboot. They were going in the right direction with Anniversary, Legend and Underworld. I would much rather see them start fresh with a new story set a few years after the end of Underworld with Natla gone for good and Lara having come to terms with her mother's death.
