I am a Dragon Quest fanboy, I make no apologies for that, and if there’s one thing I both fully understand and am bothered by, it’s that the series has never really mattered outside Japan. I can see how lots of people can see it as too Japanese, kiddy or archaic, but every time the latest DQ game goes big in Japan, I hope that perhaps this will be the game that turns America on to the franchise. And so the cycle begins again with the upcoming Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies, which Nintendo is publishing in the US and UK next month. We just got our hands on the first localized trailer, and here it is:
It warms our hearts to see those anime sequences in the style of longtime series art designer Akira Toriyama (of Dragon Ball fame), while at the same time showing off some of the classiest DS graphics around. I can’t wait to get my hands on IX, especially since it seems to be the most innovative game the series has ever seen, and a game that sells 4.2 million in just one country can’t be that bad, right?
