Catherine video - Full Access Preview

Let it never be said that we’re not excited about Catherine! Whatever the hell the game winds up being about, GR’s writtenabout it several billion times even though Atlus has yet to confirm a stateside release. So once we figured out we could hoodwink the Japanese PlayStation Store into giving us the demo for free… yeah, this here FAP features damn near every curious soul in the entire US office. Watch it - you know you wanna.

Please feel free to explain to us what the hell just happened in the comments below.

"Veteran game maker ATLUS, known for their revolutionary Shin Megami Tensei (Persona) series and their Etrian Odyssey series, bring their first native High Definition release to 7th generation consoles with the production of Catherine, a hybrid of puzzle action and psychological horror with adult themes that pits protagonist Vincent against his own nightmares and a snarled relationship triangle in the midst of a wave of mysterious deaths in his neighborhood. As Vincent you alternate between playing through your daytime and nighttime scenarios, navigating relationship scenarios in the day with Katherine, your marriage prospect, and Catherine, the seductive mysterious girl you've newly fallen for. At night you must battle through your nightmares, bizarre worlds governed by the logic of survival against fantastic obstacles with their own puzzle logic, in the company of other dreamers - given life in the game as sheep. With animated sequences from acclaimed Studio 4 degrees C, this is a game experience that pushes the survival horror envelope. February 17th 2011 release." this is a description of the game (in case anyone still wants/needs it) that came from a site called jlist that i just recently discovered :o you can even preorder the game (for $110...)

Hot damn, this single video encapsulates the entire premise of what makes GamesRadar so awesome. Relatively obscure Japanese game - check Delightful and hilarious commentary - check Chris Antista with a raging anime boner - check Keep it up guys. We love it.

I really hope this comes to the US. Chris's runthrough was pretty funny. I was on the edge of my seat!

This was the funniest video I had seen in a long time

I think this would work better as an anime than a game... but I will say this. I have no idea what the hell is going on in this game, and I am just starting to learn japanese, but I am importing this. Totally.

Is this game nothing? ....or is it everything?
  • Catalyst - January 29, 2011 3:59 a.m.

Since the gameplay takes place in a dream (from what i understand), and sheep are counted in order to fall asleep, there is a pretty obvious connection. Beyond that though I really have no idea :P Thanks for another FAP! Game looks pretty weird, but I like the visual style. Still keeping my eyes on this one :D

Oh, Japan. You tease us so with your odd, perverse, "WTF" games. Now I want to play the demo... :-p
  • Gameguy94 - January 28, 2011 11:31 p.m.

That game has Japanese written all over it! And hot damn you guys were sure having fun!

So, a couple random guesses: *The drinking will provide an interesting dynamic where the more you drink, the easier the dreams will be, but the text messages will be garbled in some way where drinking will make it easier to say something stupid, refer to either girl by the wrong first letter of the name, or just make all your options worse, etc., making you balance the difficulty between the gaming and dating sim parts of it. *The sheep represent sleeping. As in, counting sheep. In a game where the main character resolves his problems in his dreams. How have you guys not figured that out yet? *This game should come to the US, but won't until it's emulatedported illegally years from now with English language translation on the PS5. (ie. Icaruga) Also, awesome FAP. I actually stood up and cheered when Chris narrowly made it at the end. Excited to see where this game goes.

Someone in this thread suggested an idea I've already had. Stick around.
