By now we’ve all studied the pictures, scoured the internet for information, and made paper-mache models in hopes of having a better understanding of the Master Chief’s beefed up arsenal in Halo 3. While those are all a great start, you need look no further to find the specs, strategy, and intelligence on the next generation of the backbone of UNSC's armory: The MA5C Assault Rifle.
Bungie has released new information about the most versatile tool Master Chief has for his third round of saving the universe. The MA5C is 750 - 900 rounds per minute of air-cooled, gas-operated, automatic fire destruction (weight: 3.8 kg unloaded, 4.1 kg loaded).
To make dispensing that destruction more convenient, the rifle has a built-in electronics suite to provide information on the rounds remaining in the magazine, a compass heading (you won’t get lost while spraying/tactically bursting clips into waves of enemy forces), as well as several unspecified "housekeeping" functions - it's no doubt too much to ask that "housekeeping" means "chainsaw" in this case.
The MA5C, of course, is similar to the original MA5B Assault Rifle (Halo 2), but it also shares characteristics of another of its predecessors, the BR55 Battle Rifle. The new MA5C walks the line between medium-long to short range effectiveness. The weapon has traded in some of its magazine capacity (down to 32 shots) for increased range (maximum effective range: 300 meters), and firepower - 10 well placed rounds followed up with a melee blow with the rock solid rifle should down a fully shielded Spartan.
