There are few animated films - or films in general - that are as perfectly set up for sequel possibilities as 2012's Wreck-It Ralph. The first film introduced a fascinating world that went mostly unexplored, which makes Walt Disney Animation Studios' confirmation of Wreck-It Ralph 2 that much more exciting.
The announcement was accompanied by a statement from director Rich Moore, who will be returning for the sequel:
"From the moment we started working on the first ‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ we knew there were so many possibilities with these characters. This time, Ralph’s wrecking wreaks havoc on the Web—as only he can do. Characters we loved in the first film are back and we are ecstatic to be working with them—and the actors who voice them—once again".
Between Big Hero 6, Frozen, and Zootropolis, to say that Disney Animation is on a roll at the moment is a bit of an understatement. Wreck-It Ralph 2 is a rare sequel for the studio, but I'm glad they decided to return to the well for this one. It will be fun to see who cameos this time round too; The first film had the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog and Street Fighter's Ryu, and with this being a sequel to a hit movie as opposed to a new IP there's a good chance we'll see more popular video game characters show up on screen come March 2018.
Directed by Rich Moore and Phil Johnston - and starring John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman - Wreck-It Ralph 2 will open in cinemas on March 9, 2018.
