Part of the reason for that was that Wolfblood was steadily gaining a fanbase older than its young teen target audience. What looked like it was going to be Byker Grove* meets Teen Wolf , actually turned out to be a smart, sharp witty show with some impressive production values, a fantastic central cast and a knack of inverting “super-powered teen” clichés. (*We like to refer to it is Hairy Byker’s Grove ). And with its empowered (and wonderfully straight-talking Geordie) lead, Maddy, it’s almost like a gateway drug to the Whedonverse. Of which, SFX , of course, heartily approves…
Season two will premiere on CBBC on 9 September and will be available on BBC iPlayer. (The final three episodes of series one are currently on iPlayer too, if you want to see what the fuss is about.) In the meantime, to get you in the mood, here’s our exclusive interview with the show’s two stars, Aimee Kelly (Maddy) & Bobby Lockwood (Rhydian).
