Duncan Jones may have flirted with making big-budget blockbusters when he directed the Warcraft movie, but to most fans he's recognized as the director of mid-budget sci-fi thrillers Moon and Source Code. And if those are the type of Duncan Jones movies you like, you should keep an eye out for his upcoming Netflix original, Mute. Here's the synopsis:
"Set in the near-future, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) is a bartender living in the pulsing city of Berlin. Because of a childhood accident, Leo lost the ability to speak and the only good thing in his life is his beautiful girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh). When she vanishes without a trace, Leo’s search for her takes him deep into the city’s seedy underbelly. A pair of wisecracking American surgeons (Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux) are the only recurring clue and Leo is forced to take on this teeming underworld in order to find his love."
Directed and co-written by Jones, Mute sounds like a return to form. There's a futuristic-but-grounded setting, a flawed/down on his luck hero, and a mystery to solve - I'd argue such are the trademarks of a Jones sci-fi flick. No word on when exactly the film will premiere, but it should be sometime this year.
