Microsoft details Xbox Ones Smart matchmaking

Among numerous other changes being introduced to Xbox Live with Xbox One later this year, the online service will feature a new matchmaking system called Smart Match. Essentially, Microsoft says it will provide an improved experience for users while they wait to start an online match and a better game when the action does kick off.

In a list of the “top things” gamers should know about Smart Match, Microsoft says the system is designed to free up your time while waiting for a game to commence. Using Xbox One’s Snap mode lets players do two things at once, so you can instantly switch to watching TV, browsing the web or even play a digital title while Smart Match prepares a second game.

It’s a bit like the Alt-Tab feature on a PC, which is pretty handy and something we haven’t seen on a home console before. One friend can also set up matches for an entire party. Microsoft says: “Once Xbox One is done finding your perfect match, it will prompt you with a simple toast—no matter where you are or what you’re doing—so you can jump straight into playing.”

The platform holder also promises Smart Match will find the “perfect players for the perfect game… using advanced algorithms to pair players based on skill, language, and now reputation”. By sharing player stats with Xbox Live and other players, titles are said to have the ability to match players based on reputation, skill, language, age, “and even your specific gameplay style”.

Among other Xbox Live features being introduced this year, Microsoft has detailed a number of changes to the way Achievements will work on Xbox One. Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox One will launch in 21 markets this November priced at $500 / £430. Xbox One games will cost $59.99 / £49.99.
