The Hollywood Reporter says Douglas Adams' character is in the hands of the Chronicle scribe
Apparently IDW and Ideate Media have optioned worldwide rights to Douglas Adams’ Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency novels. The partnership will co-fund development and co-produce with the plan to secure a direct-to-series commitment. IDW's TV gang Circle of Confusion will executive produce along with Chronicle 's Max Landis , who will also write the pilot.
Dirk Gently most recently appeared on our screens in a series for BBC Four with Howard Overman showrunning. That ran just from 2010 to 2012. Before that there was a radio version with Harry Enfield in the title role.
"Alongside the obvious yada yada, I'm a lifelong fan, Long Dark Teatime Of The Soul is one of the best books ever,” Landis is quoted as saying. “Douglas Adams is a visionary who forever changed the way science fiction is written and talked about and even thought about and even the way real actual science is thought about and without whom our culture would be noticeably different for the worse. I'd also just like to say holy crap, it's Dirk Gently."
Arvind Ethan David and Zainir Aminullah of Ideate will also serve as executive producers, with David telling The Hollywood Reporter that Douglas Adams himself came to watch an adaptation of Dirk Gently he staged when a student. In addition to the television series, IDW and Ideate will develop a series of Dirk Gently comics for release next spring.
