Judging by the latest trailer, it looks like Tony Stark cradling James Rhodes' limp body is the big "no turning back" moment in Captain America: Civil War. But is Rhodes just unconscious, escalating the central conflict between Captain America and Iron Man with no permanent loss? Or will it also spell the end for one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most prominent supporting characters?
Don Cheadle, who has played James Rhodes/War Machine since Iron Man 2 in 2010, didn't seem too bothered either way in an interview with the New York Daily News. That or he knows better than to go anywhere near answering the question of his character's fate before the movie comes out.
The way the trailer is cut heavily implies that Bucky Barnes, Captain America's longtime friend and (hopefully) reformed assassin, is responsible for shooting down War Machine. I doubt that massive blast came from a regular rifle, but it certainly looks like Iron Man blames Barnes and the Captain for the incident. Exactly the sort of suspicious treachery you'd expect from a psychological thriller that just happens to star super heroes.
Directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, and starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chadwick Boseman, Tom Holland, Anthony Mackie, and Sebastian Stan, Captain America: Civil War will open in UK cinemas on April 29, 2016 and on May 6, 2016 in the US.
