David Cromarty enjoyed the second annual local Wiltshire convention

Conventions largely succeed or fail on the quality of their guests, and the event didn’t disappoint in this regard, with popular writers like Kieron Gillen (Iron Man, Young Avengers) and Simon Spurrier (X-Men Legacy) giving entertaining and insightful talks on subjects such as writing for comics. The highlight of the panels, though, was the launch of The Heavenly Chord, the first collaboration between independent comic creators Jon Lock and Nich Angell, who spoke in detail about how they created their individual series and brought them together for this crossover. Their wit and obvious love for the medium was typical of the convention’s spirit, and left this writer very keen to sample their work.
Anyone wanting to follow in the footsteps of these creators could talk to publishers or get their portfolios reviewed by The Comic Book Alliance in the main hall, which also housed a wide variety of retailers and creators to tempt attendees into spending their hard-earned cash. Whether you were looking for a rare back issue, an exclusive sketch or a replica movie Batman costume, there was something here for you.
Unlike some of the larger conventions, there was also plenty to entertain the next generation of comic readers, including face painting and some of the most impressive balloon creations you’re likely to find. (Despicable Me’s Minions seemed to be the most popular choice, although one child had a very impressive balloon Joker.)
Everyone present seemed to have a wonderful time, as demonstrated by the cheer that erupted when the organisers announced that next year’s event would expand to fill two days. On the strength of this year’s convention, it’s not to be missed.
