Due to arrive in a little over two months, Suicide Squad is already generating positive word-of-mouth, largely thanks to Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. It's not a huge surprise. The dastardly character is reportedly such a badass that Warner Bros. is considering her to headline an all-female DC villain movie - that's not counting a potential Suicide Squad sequel. If this latest rumor is anything to go by, the studio is keen to push more standalone movies for some of Harley's playmates.
Out of the Task Force X gang it's being reported that at least two other baddies are being eyed for the solo treatment. We Got This Covered's sources say that The Joker "is a definite possibility for a spinoff," and Jared Leto "seems up for it." The site adds that Warner is "really hot on Jai Courtney’s character Boomerang right now. Nothing’s set in stone yet, but you’re definitely going to be seeing a lot more of these guys in the years to come.”
While we're still waiting for official confirmation on the sequel and the Harley Quinn spin-off, the idea of a Joker and/or Boomerang movie is something fun to chew over. It's not a massive surprise to hear of a potential Joker movie; it's just unusual that it's taken this long for one to enter the conversation.
Leto's antics on set have caught everyone's attention - not difficult when you're mailing soiled prophylactics to cast members - and raised the profile of his Joker. It'll be interesting to see how his behind-the-scenes theatrics affect his performance, and how it stands up against Heath Ledger's turn in The Dark Knight. It could make or break this rumored spin-off.
As for Courtney's Boomerang, he's nabbed some amusing one-liners in the trailers. Maybe if he lands a spin-off, he could steer the DCEU toward its lighter, comical side?
Directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Joel Kinnaman, Suicide Squad will open in the UK and US on August 5, 2016.
