MTV’s Scream revival series is gearing up to hit the small screen later this month. The last few months has seen a stream of trailers, clips and posters flood the web to kickstart audiences’ love of all things blood-soaked. And one topic of debate has revolved around the killer’s mask - which, thanks to an image dropped by EW, we now know strikes out into new territory.
The premise of the series follows the original movie’s self-aware angle, and by that very token it must reinvent itself if it wants to stay relevant. So, that means the iconic Ghostface mask that terrified Drew Barrymore and Neve Campbell in Wes Craven’s 1996 thriller won’t make an appearance. Instead, there’s a new face set to terrorise teens....
“The [original] mask is so iconic,” executive producer Jaime Paglia says. “If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren’t following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience.” A fair point, and one which Craven himself stands by as he also adds: “The new mask is cool and scary and takes the series into a new direction. It also ties into the story, which I won’t give away.”
There’s definitely a hint of Jason Voorhees’ hockey mask and Michael Myers’ William Shatner mask in this new design, but whether or not it’s as scary as its predecessor, only time will tell.
Scream premieres on June 30 in the US and July 1 in the UK.
