Subnautica 2 Sandspears aren't a weapon, but a deadly creature you need to Bioscan to unlock a new Biomod

You'll need a keen eye looking for Subnautica 2 Sandspears. These powerful creatures might be large and deadly, dealing significant damage with just one bite, but they also hide themselves underground until you get too close to avoid them.

Unfortunately, you need to get close enough to Bioscan one of these killer fish if you want to unlock all the Subnautica 2 biomods, so here's where you can find them, and how to scan a Sandspear without dying.

Where to find Subnautica 2 Sandspears

You can find Subnautica 2 Sandspears in the area around your lifepod and around the Observatory. However, they bury themselves almost completely under sand, so look for a blue antenna sticking out of the ground, surrounded by sharp teeth, as seen in the image above.

Get too close to this ominous indicator, and a Sandspear will instantly pop out of the ground and sink its teeth into you, dealing serious damage - so you might want to make sure you have some medkits on you when seeking them out.

Here are some good locations to look for Sandspears in Subnautica 2:

  • Swim 110m from the lifepod at 60° NE, then to a depth of 30m
  • Swim 140m from the lifepod at 90° E, then to a depth of 20m

Generally speaking, you can find these fish by swimming along the surface of the ocean, both in the area around your lifepod and near the Observatory - there are no Sandspears in the Alien Ruins area of the map.

You'll then need to scan the monster in order to unlock two new Biomods, so read on to find out how to get close enough to do so.

How to Bioscan Subnautica 2 Sandspears

The Databank entry for Subnautica 2 Sandspears.

To scan Subnautica 2 Sandspears, get close enough to hit one with your Feedback or Sonic Resonator, which should force it out from underground. The Sandspear will then become passive for a while before reburying itself, during which time you can use your scanner.

If you get too close and the creature attacks, it will also become passive before it hides again, so you can also use this time to scan the Sandspear. Clearly, since it only attacks when you get too close, it's just a bit defensive.

The most important thing to note if you're trying to unlock the associated Biomod is that you need to scan the Sandspear with a Subnautica 2 Bioscanner - not just a regular scanner.

If you're looking for some other fish to scan, check out our list of all the Subnautica 2 leviathans, but be careful getting close to them.
