Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Monoco actor jokes he'll be "filled with murderous rage" if he can't reprise his role for the RPG's live-action movie adaptation
Rich Keeble "would love to play Monoco in any shape or form," not that he expects to
With Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in line for a live-action movie adaptation, one of the stars of Sandfall Interactive's J'RPG jokes that he'll be "filled with murderous rage" if he doesn't get to reprise his role.
The actor in question is Rich Keeble, the voice of the battle-loving Gestral party member Monoco, who tells Polygon that he doesn't "know anything about how that film is going on." You'd be forgiven if you'd forgotten the movie was even happening – after all, it was announced last January, in partnership with Story Kitchen, before the game even released and became far more popular than its creators ever expected.
Details are incredibly light on the ground for now, but Keeble says that he "would love to play Monoco in any shape or form," so of course that includes the movie. The actor expects that "obviously they're going to get famous people in to play the characters where possible," but being a Gestral rather than a human character, Monoco might get slightly different treatment.
"Because Monoco is most likely to be CGI-ed or [motion-captured] or something – hopefully not AI, goodness me – I do like to think that maybe they could get me to do the voice from a studio in London," Keeble says, joking that he could do it at home "in my booth right now."
He humorously continues: "I invite every fan to boycott that film, unless I can voice Monoco, or I will be filled with murderous rage." With that same energy, he jests that he'll watch the movie when he comes out… "depending on whether I'm in it or not."
It'll be interesting to see what the movie creators decide to do with Clair Obscur's cast. Keeble is being rather modest when he seemingly excludes himself from the group of "famous people" he expects to be cast – he's previously appeared in Rivals and Good Omens, after all – but the JRPG is full of other notable names, too. Gustave is played by Daredevil star Charlie Cox, while Renoir is The Lord of the Rings icon Andy Serkis.
Cox previously told us that "they should get Robert Pattinson to play the part, and I should do the voice. Because then they would have pretty much the exact Gustave from the game," which would certainly be one amusing way to handle the character. As Cox says, "I just think Gustave looks like Rob."
