Final Fantasy 14 Evercold promises to scrap the MMO's 2-minute meta and change its jobs for the better, and we're all thanking the Twelve: "Nobody will miss it"
"Good riddance!"
Final Fantasy 14 had quite the past weekend, between director Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida's big Evercold reveal and everything that's set to come with 8.0 – but I'd argue that one of the most significant announcements is the change to the MMO's two-minute meta.
In case you're out of the loop, Final Fantasy 14 – especially the game's more high-end content like Extremes, Savages, and Ultimates – sees fans often utilizing a two-minute window while executing their job's rotation. Basically, everyone applies their buffs at the same time so that they all align properly.
It's a system of synergy, but it's one that we apparently won't have to worry about anymore come Evercold in January 2027.
Yoshi-P announced as much during Fan Fest 2026 in Anaheim, California, over the weekend, alongside job tweaks and changes to tomestones, roulettes, and item levels.
While discussing the new class modes – Reborn and Evolved – he said, "We want to have something that's unique, and when we try to experiment, then we start running into problems about synergy." You know, like when your two-minute window pops but the boss isn't there?
"That's frustrating. We don't want that happening, so we really wanted to have players have that freedom and make it a very fun fight. After a lot of deliberating, that's when we came to the decision that we should get rid of the synergy actions."
Unsurprisingly, the crowd went wild (me included) at this statement. Square Enix – and the community – wants "something that is more than just the 120-second cycles of attacking and then nothing."
I'll toast to that – and I'm not the only one. Reactions over on Reddit show similarly pleased fans, with one exclaiming, "Two min meta is now officially dead! And nobody will miss it."
Another comments, "Good riddance! Finally. Yoshi-P has it right – the two-min meta not only limits job design, as in everything needs to revolve around two-min timers, but also… limits their [developers'] designing freedom." I certainly agree.

They add that while the Evolved job mode is a "positive," the real thing that has them "truly excited to return" to Final Fantasy 14 is Square Enix axing the two-minute meta in favor of a more player-focused system.
Heck, even folks who don't mind the current window are happy to see the devs spice things up. As one Warrior of Light replies, "I was never a two-min hater, but I'm always down to change things up." Valid, anon. Very valid.
I personally can't wait for 8.0 and all its changes myself, especially as a healer. Final Fantasy 14 is finally letting healers be healers by removing cast times for attack spells and changing GCD heals, so Evercold is going to be massive for me as an Astrologian, y'all.
