Adorable Adventures really does live up to its name with its wholesome premise centred around Boris, a wild boar piglet learning to use his developing sense of smell to track down his missing brothers and sisters scattered around a serene national park.
It goes without saying that if you’re a cozy gamer and a fan of peaceful, contemplative titles like A Short Hike, you should definitely consider adding this to your wishlist ahead of its April 30 release on Steam, the Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S!
Sure Boris is undeniably cute, but what exactly is it that makes him stand out as a memorable character that we should really care about? This is precisely the question that Montpellier-based developer Wild Sheep Studio have been asking themselves throughout the project. The team knew that they really wanted to create a connection between Boris and the player, and so they gave him a relatable personality. He's rebellious and easily distracted, but also playful, innocent, positive, and curious, traits intended to remind players of their own childhood days.
Let’s not forget that Boris is also a wild boar, an animal with unique characteristics reflected in Adorable Adventures’ main gameplay mechanic, scent. You see, boars have an incredible sense of smell, and through his nose, Boris is able to learn about the world around him. Scent trails reveal an unseen world and give exploration a completely new dimension, the scents themselves even having layers with stronger smells overpowering weaker ones.
By identifying enough of the same smell, Boris can choose to block out unwanted scents so that he can focus on new discoveries. These scent mechanics also reinforce the idea that Boris is growing up and learning from his experiences in the park, slowly becoming less distracted, and allowing him to focus on his true mission, to sniff out his missing siblings!
Each of his six equally adorable brothers and sisters are hiding somewhere in the park, and Boris will need to use all of his accumulated knowledge about his surroundings in order to find them! By the end of his adventure Boris will have his very own fuzzy entourage and, I mean, who doesn’t want to see that?
