007 First Light dev IO Interactive won't publish future James Bond games despite its success, as Amazon gaming boss reminds everyone who owns the IP now
Sequels will be "done by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios."
Off the back of IO Interactive's massive success with 007 First Light, Jeff Gattis, general manager of gaming at Amazon, says future James Bond games will come from Amazon itself… because why not mess with a good thing?
Speaking to Polygon, Gattis explains that while "we did not [make First Light]," going forward, "we do have a stake in it because we now own the IP." It was a different situation for this game, as he notes that the "IP acquisition happened after the First Light IO deal was already done." So, while Amazon "didn't have the full rights to this First Light James Bond game," hypothetical sequels will be "done by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios."
While I have my doubts that this means Amazon will suddenly decide to take development of the next 007 game from IO Interactive's hands, it does feel like a signal that the Hitman studio's next Bond game will probably not be self-published, with Amazon Game Studios taking on the role of publisher while letting IO do its thing… At least, I hope so.
"We do see this continued integration of video and movies and video games" Gattis says, adding, "We think that's a real opportunity for us to create IP that extends – or kind of expands upon – TV shows and movies." He then points out that there are multiple upcoming Tomb Raider games set to release in the next year or so, alongside a Tomb Raider show on Prime Video currently in the works. He says: "There's a lot of things we have in the works on new games that'll relate to Prime Video IP."
