10. Dead Space remake

Dead Space Remake screenshot showing Isaac Clarke shooting his plasma cutter at a charging necromorph

Developer: Motive Studios
Platform(s): PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5

Kicking off our list of games like Resident Evil is Dead Space Remake, a third-person survival-horror game set in... well... space. Creepy monsters are scary enough, but when you have to deal with them in the blackness of space, the horror is amplified. Dead Space came out during a time when fans were starving for true survival horror in a modern sense, and now that we have a stunning remake that perfectly encapsulates and updates the original, there's no better time to discover it.

The remake pushes these factors further still, turning the necromorphs into the stuff of true nightmare fuel but never deviating from the harrowing heart of what Dead Space is. The Ishimura is as iconic as the RCPD, the plasma cutter as beloved as Leon's Matilda pistol...we could go on, but I'd rather you just play the thing and see what makes it so great.

9. Days Gone

Developer: Bend Studio
Platform(s): PS4, PS5, PC

Days Gone is a great option if you're after some zombie-infested action, with hordes of "Freakers" roaming the rural landscape. It takes a lot of the shooting elements of the more recent Resident Evil games, but adds in a heartfelt story and a massive open world.

Regardless of how this game compares to other PlayStation exclusives, there's no denying that its action gameplay is satisfying. It features an in-depth progression system, tons of missions, and a nuanced crafting system that makes it feel like a survival game. If you like the more action-oriented Resident Evil games, you should definitely give Days Gone a try.

8. Signalis

Signalis screenshot of a dialogue interaction

Developer: rose-engine
Platform(s): PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch

Signalis's roots in Capcom's legacy franchise are plain to see, adapted and reworked to suit a thrilling narrative of terrifying proportions. One of my favorite games like Resident Evil also sees a dastardly plot being uncovered, albeit with a sci-fi twist to present a thrilling genre crossover.

It's survival horror at its purest, borrowing a touch of old-school Resi's unique camerawork in adopting a top-down view instead of fixed camera angles, as well as its heavy leaning on resource management, shooter gameplay, and a hero worth rallying behind. Don't sleep on Signalis - you'll thank me later.

7. Crow Country

A spindle enemy, a creature with extremely long arms and legs, approaches Mara Forest at the entrance plaza of the Crow Country theme park

Developer: SFB Games
Platform(s): PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PS4, Switch

If you have a hankering for the old-school days of Spencer Mansion and Raccoon City, Crow Country is the game like Resident Evil you need to get on. Mara's journey through a derelict theme park has all the genre staples you know and love: PS1-style graphics, fixed camera angles, puzzles galore, and a truly unnerving soundtrack that makes you constantly worried about what might lie just out of sight. What's more, it's way more readily available than the classic games on a range of modern consoles.

Crow Country stands out as a prime example of a new game that uses survival horror to near perfection, showing how old tricks can certainly be applied to modern games while still feeling like a totally fresh experience.

6. Alien Isolation

Alien: Isolation box art showing a woman in a space helmet looking fearfully into the camera

Developer: Creative Assembly
Platform(s): PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch

As we've mentioned already, there's something to be said about the creepiness of horror in space. That's where Alien Isolation comes in, surprisingly taking an existing IP and becoming arguably the best in the entire franchise. Alien Isolation puts you in the shoes of Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley, which gives it a canonical significance.

Aside from its story, the gameplay is tense, as the deadly Xenomorph is always lurking around. This raises the stakes and makes you have to approach every situation carefully. The game is less action oriented than others on this list, with an emphasis on running and hiding more so than all-out battle.

Read our Alien: Isolation review

5. Silent Hill 2 Remake

Silent Hill 2 Remake in-development screenshot

Developer: Bloober Team
Platform(s): PS5, PC

Resident Evil and Silent Hill often go hand-in-hand when it comes to horror, and the honest-to-god brilliance of Silent Hill 2 Remake is no exception. While the original Silent Hill 2 sported practically an identical combat system as the earlier Resident Evil entries, Bloober and Konami's 2024 team-up sees James Sunderland's story given a modern survival horror revamp.

That means you can expect reworked Pyramid Head encounters, brand new puzzles, and an expanded open world town to explore. The remake is a perfect choice for anyone looking for more third person over-the-shoulder gameplay that riffs off Resident Evil 2 Remake's genre-defining systems with flair, all while still retaining the horrifying heart of Silent Hill 2

Read our Silent Hill 2 Remake review

4. Outlast

Outlast screenshot of a monster viewed through night vision

Developer: Red Barrels
Platform(s): PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch

Outlast has one thing all the best games like Resident Evil has: terrifying monsters that seem unkillable. The major difference in Outlast is that our protagonist is no gun-toting member or STARS or rookie cop with a handy shotgun, but almost completely helpless against the hulking beasts in their path.

That sense of total hopelessness will be familiar to any who've faced Nemesis or the Tyrant, with nothing to do but run at the sound of their plodding footsteps as they chase you through Raccoon City. If your stomach is up for a whole game of pretty much exactly that, paired with another corporate conspiracy to boot, Outlast is the game for you.

Read our Outlast review

3. Fatal Frame

Fatal Frame screenshot of two women looking up at glowing red butterflies

Developer: Valve
Platform(s): PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch

Fatal Frame is one of those games like Resident Evil that just gets under your skin. With female protagonists to channel those Jill and Claire girl power vibes, Fatal Frame is a terrifying survival horror game with a gut-wrenching psychological twist.

As another Japan-made creation, Fatal Frame shares a lot of the grit and darkness of the original Resi games. It's something few Western developers dared to do back in 2001, channeling the darkest parts of the human psyche to present a horrifying world of nightmares. Ghosts replace zombies, cameras and flashlights replace firearms, but the overall spirit that old school Resident Evil games tap into can be found in spades in Fatal Frame.

2. Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2 trailer screenshot of Alan with rain on his face, staring into the camera

Developer: Remedy Entertainment
Platform(s): PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5

Alan Wake 2 might not have shambling zombies baying for your guts, but its slick blend of third person survival horror gameplay and puzzling narrative mystery will have you hooked whether you're playing Saga or Alan's segments.

It's the kind of game like Resident Evil that makes you thankful for how much the genre has progressed over time, showing growth not only for the titular character but how he and FBI co-star Saga Andersen navigate a world of danger before them. Expect innovate mechanics, a time-bending storyline, and a fair share of jump scares when you embark on all that Alan Wake 2 has to offer.

Read our Alan Wake 2 review

1. The Evil Within

The Evil Within box art

Developer: Tango Gameworks
Platform(s): PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox Xbox One, PS5, PS4

The Evil Within series is a spiritual successor to Resident Evil. In fact, it was directed by Shinji Mikami, the creator of the Resident Evil series. After playing both series, you can definitely tell they come from the same creator. The Evil Within leans more into the psychological horror elements, presenting you with off-the-wall creatures and situations that don’t exist in reality as we know it.

But from a gameplay perspective, The Evil Within is a greatest hits representation of the Resident Evil games that came before it, combining stealth with action, all under the frame of survival horror. If you only play one entry on this list of games like Resident Evil, it has to be The Evil Within.
