As it turns out, that long-gestating Funko Pop movie still happening... and we can expect so much more to come.
According to Variety, the toy company has struck a deal with production company Rideback and AI entertainment company Spuree to "develop and produce film, TV and animated content," including "hybrid, live-action, scripted, and unscripted formats." Rideback is perhaps best known for producing It: Chapters 1 and 2, the live-action Lilo and Stitch, as well as The LEGO Movie.
Funko Inc. launched in 1998 and has been the go-to 'cute merch' option for major movies and TV shows, but is perhaps best known for its little Marvel and DC vinyl figures. The company also has a history of spoiling major plot points in shows by releasing/announcing toys of characters before they have been introduced. It's tradition at this point.
The new deal is reportedly "designed to unlock new storytelling opportunities rooted in Funko’s globally recognized brands and deep fan engagement, while building scalable franchises that can live across screens, platforms, and other consumer touchpoints."
This also means the Funko Pop movie that we've seen rumors about for quite some time (with no verified reports) is actually, in fact, happening. The report states that the movie has been in development "for years" at this point, but it looks like Warner Bros. is finally moving ahead with the project.
