As the video game adaptation phenomenon grows, Atari and Universal are teaming up to bring 10 (yes, 10) movies based on classic games to life.
Per Deadline, a movie based on Atari IP is already in the works, with a screenplay penned by Jungle Cruise and Hellboy writers Matt Reilly and Carl Hampe. We don't know which Atari game is first up, but we do know that the list includes: Asteroids, Adventure, Berzerk, Breakout, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Millipede, Missile Command, Pong, and Yars’ Revenge.
"For more than five decades, Atari has created games and worlds that have remained part of popular culture long after their original release,” Atari CEO Wade Rosen told Deadline. "We are excited to work with Universal and Entertainment 360 to bring the spirit of our iconic brand and games to a new medium."
This is an interesting venture for sure, given that Atari games famously have very limited graphics, as the first Atari console hit shelves all the way back in 1977. I wonder if they'll go the route of Apple TV's Tetris movie, which focused on the making of and the drama behind it, rather than the actual gameplay (though I would've absolutely paid money to watch a Tron-like Tetris movie for two straight hours). A Yars' Revenge movie sounds the most exciting, given how creepy the artwork is for the insect-alien hybrid race the game is based on.
