Seven years after he first teased it, Andy Muschietti has confirmed that he's "going to do" a six-hour supercut of It and It: Chapter Two – but we won't be getting it until after It: Welcome to Derry season 2.
When asked for an update on the combined version, which will reportedly feature newly filmed sequences as well as deleted scenes, by SlashFilm recently, the horror director explained: "We didn't have time to do it because we were involved in all kinds of projects. The show had a priority over the supercut.
"We're in a moment now where we can definitely go to the studio and ask for support, but 'when?' is the question. They can say, 'Yeah, go for it,' but now we are sort of committed, like happily committed, to season 2 of Welcome to Derry. And there's other movie projects going around," Muschietti added, before definitively stating: "But we are going to do it."
The idea of a supercut was first... floated around in 2019, following the theatrical release of star-studded sequel It: Chapter Two. In the past, Muschietti has suggested that it would likely have a different structure than the existing two-parter, possibly weaving the narratives together in a less chronological fashion and embracing the dual timeline of Stephen King's 1986 novel.
Despite the success of It: Welcome to Derry's first season, which pulled in nearly 20 million viewers worldwide, HBO has yet to officially renew the popular prequel. Muschietti and his producing partner Barbara Muschietti insist it's in development, however.
"We're working [on it], the studio's working [on it]. We want to make it real, and we need the material," the latter told Collider. "A lot of times, the announcements are really just the studio showing confidence. We don't need that because, honestly, we're good. So when we greenlight something, it's real. We’re not just tossing out an update to get people to watch. It's good."
With that, we'd better exercise some patience when it comes to Pennywise's return, on both the big and small screens. Fortunately, It, It: Chapter Two, and It: Welcome to Derry season 1 are all streaming now on HBO Max, which just launched in the UK and Ireland.
