Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has only been in cinemas for a little over one week, but the movie has already been leaked online numerous times.
The new movie appeared in full on Twitter over the weekend. It looked like the leaks had both been filmed from inside movie theatres and in 4K, meaning someone must have got hold of a digital copy somehow. The leaks gathered millions of views after being on the site for a few hours. However, Universal Pictures is taking care of the situation, quickly removing leaks as soon as they can.
In a statement to Deadline, a spokesperson from Universal said, "We became aware of the unauthorized posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols. We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights."
The Odyssey is extremely in demand in the moment. Tickets to 70mm screenings have sold out in most cinemas up until the end of September. This is unsurprising as presales for the movie's opening sold out in a matter of hours one year before it was even released. The movie has grossed upwards of $639 million globally so far, after hitting the big screen on July 17.
The movie, which is based on Homer's ancient Greek epic of the same name, has also become an online sensation, and a huge hit with fans and critics alike. The Odyssey isn't the first movie to be leaked online this year. In April, Avatar Aang: The Last Aibender appeared online before it had even hit screens. The new Avatar movie finally released on Paramount Plus on July 25.
