The Power Rangers' new armor is a little less spandex, a little more Mass Effect

I don't think anyone was expecting to see the Power Rangers in their traditional spandex-and-motorcycle-helmets look in the upcoming reboot film, but a new photo from Entertainment Weekly shows just how far the teens' costumes have changed. Behold, your new Power Rangers:

Okay, so it's a bit jarring. But honestly, I kinda dig it. The armor looks to me like a mix between Mass Effect and The Guyver, and I'm totally okay with that. Production designer Andrew Menzies tells EW that the armor is "an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made," while director Dean Israelite says that the suits crystallize around the heroes, to reflect the themes of metamorphosis and coming of age.

Rita Repulsa's new look had made me a little worried, but these new suits look like just the right blend of camp and cool. I say bring on the Zords!

Directed by Dean Israelite and starring Naomi Scott, Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin, and Elizabeth Banks, the Power Rangers movie will be released in UK and US cinemas on January 13, 2017.
