Having been a twinkle in the collective eye of the fanbase for so many years, it was heartening to see an official panel for the Veronica Mars movie at this year’s Comic-Con.
With Kristen Bell and director Rob Thomas both in attendance, we got some idea of what to expect from the feature-length outing, with Thomas making a rather unexpected comparison with The Godfather Part 3 …
"I can tell you that it sort of has a Godfather 3 theme to it," said Thomas, "Which is odd, because why not pick Godfather 2 ? It was better!"
"Veronica has not worked as a private detective since the last time you saw her. Part of this movie is her getting back into this life she thought she left behind."
Just when she thought she was out, etc. Meanwhile, there was also confirmation of a big-name guest star, with Jamie Lee Curtis set to play Veronica’s boss in her new career as a lawyer.
As for the film’s Kickstarter roots, Thomas is hopeful that this first fan-funded film will be the starting point in a successful and long-running franchise. However, he does recognise the ethical issues implicit in making a big profit off the back of fans’ investment…
“I want this to be the Bond franchise,” laughs Thomas. “I hope we make a ton of money on this movie, and we get to do it through the normal channels. If we're a huge hit, I'm not sure Kickstarter is meant to fund huge hits!”
