Pacific Rim 2 scores a 2018 release date AND Suicide Squad's Scott Eastwood

Monsters shall once again rise from the glittering breach for Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013's creature feature that's now due to to arrive in theaters on February 23, 2018. It's taken a while for the movie to reach this point after a rather troublesome spell in development hell, but things are clearly on the turn as Legendary has staked out a proper release date. Looks like the apocalypse is officially being cancelled again.

Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba starred in the first film, and so far we've not heard news of their return. The Force Awakens' John Boyega is attached to play the new lead (as the son of Elba's character) and it appears as if he'll be joined by Suicide Squad's Scott Eastwood for what Deadline calls a "key role." Until we learn anything at all about the story we'll have to settle for guesswork about his character, and I'm guessing that he's playing a Jaeger pilot.

While Guillermo Del Toro, who co-wrote and directed the first flick, won't be back at the helm his successor should instil fans with confidence; it's Daredevil executive producer Steven S. DeKnight. He's directing from a script penned by del Toro, which honestly, sounds like a match made in heaven.

Directed by Steven S. DeKnight and starring John Boyega and Scott Eastwood, Pacific Rim 2 stomps into theaters on February 23, 2018.
