Let It Die is Suda51s first ever free-to-play game

No more Bergamo

No more Bergamo

Truth be told, I was a little confused by the first trailer for Let It Die, the next title from developer Goichi (Suda51) Suda and his team at Grasshopper Manufacture. The teaser video didnt have much gameplay, and the darkly violent live action segments didnt tell me much about the free-to-play aspects of the game. Though I was able to nail down a handful of the specifics after interviewing Suda about the multiplayer action title, Let It Die still has a lot of mystery surrounding it.

Hardcore Grasshopper fans may recall the company announcing a PS4 exclusive named Lily Bergamo, which has since transmogrified into Let It Die. The art style looks a bit grimmer now--in fact, the Grim Reaper seen in the logo factors into the game, though Suda isnt ready to detail just how that specter is included. One of the few things Suda51 did discuss was how this is his teams first fully-multiplayer title, a move that trades on the strengths of Grasshoppers new owner, GungHo. That means story will likely play a less important role compared to their previous games like Killer Is Dead and Lollipop Chainsaw, mainly because the lead character is player created and built up through experience. You start off in just your underwear, gaining clothing equipment with each kill, and while the F2P model suggests purchasable outfits, there isnt confirmation on that yet.

Another thing I did confirm from my time with Suda is that your losses will still be useful to the game, with every death feeding data to Let It Die that'll be used to create new enemies within the game world, populating the universe with unique AI. The last thing I could nail down is that there will be some pro wrestling flavor to the game. The team at Grasshopper is known for loving sports entertainment, and Suda and his team were excited to talk about how Let It Die features wrestling-style melee attacks on top of guns and melee weapons. As our time together came to a close, Suda and his coworkers started calling out specific moves like piledrivers and brainbusters that will apparently be in the game, which is all I needed to know to get properly hyped for the 2015 release.
