The new print issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine has an article on the recent news of BioWare and Pandemic being purchased by Electronic Arts. The article points out that because of the purchase, EA will now own Mass Effect, the recently released sci-fi RPG from developer BioWare that Microsoft published for the Xbox 360. However, according to an unnamed source cited in the article, an agreement has been made for Mass Effect 2 and 3 to both be published by Microsoft as well, with BioWare and EA to be listed as developers rather than publishers.

Microsoft has confirmed to GameDaily BIZ that BioWare's critically acclaimed RPG is off to a red hot start with one million copies sold in less than three weeks.

"We've... seen a strong response to both Halo 3 sales with more than 5 million, and Mass Effect which has sold more than a million copies in less than three weeks," noted Bell, highlighting consumers' reaction to Microsoft's holiday push.

On the official Bioware forums, forum posters were discussing as to whether or not Mass Effect first week sales of 200,000 were impressive for the critically acclaimed title, using Vgchartz' American sales chart for the week ending November 24th, 2007. Jarrett Lee, a marketing manager at Bioware, posted this message:

"Through official channels the current sales quantity (which I can't share, so don't ask) is considerably better. Not sure about Vgchartz's methodology."

This week's top rental charts from U.S. game rental company GameFly, representing the most requested games for the week ending December 3rd, highlight both to-be-released and already released games in a unique demand-specific chart.

This week's top five all-platform requests show little movement once again, after last week saw the list barely ruffled. Assassin's Creed still takes the top spot for a third week with Mass Effect in second for its second week in a row.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which spent the last two weeks at number four, slips a bit to the fourth spot to make room for Kane and Lynch: Dead Men to move up one spot into the fourth spot, but that's the only movement -- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune stays at number five, where it entered last week.

BioWare's quality assurance agent Tayce Wilson posted in the official Mass Effect forums:

"There appears to be a reoccurring issue where players are getting disc unreadable errors, or random crashes. This seems to be most commonly found somewhere after character creation, but can occur anywhere in the game."

Wilson proposes a fix to the issue.

Controversial video game Mass Effect goes on sale in Singapore today -- with an M18 sticker on the package. It is the first game in Singapore to carry a rating, in this case M18, which means someone under 18 cannot buy it.

Mass Effect was initially banned by Singapore's Media Development Authority because of a brief love scene between a human and an alien, both female. The MDA later changed its mind - effectively fast-forwarded its new video-game rating system meant to take effect next year.
