Mass Effect co-showrunner Daniel Casey has questioned reports that the upcoming Amazon series was being rewritten for a wider audience.
Back in early April, The Ankler reported that Amazon's head of global television Peter Friedlander was waiting on rewrites before giving the go-ahead for Mass Effect to enter production. Those changes purportedly focused on being "more appealing to non-gamers."
In reply to a fan asking about the report on Bluesky, Casey wrote, "I can't talk about the specifics of what I'm writing (I've signed NDAs etc) – but for whatever it's worth, the article by the Ankler caught me off guard just as much as you. I don't know where that 'non-gaming audiences' quote came from or who said it, but at no point has that been said to me."

In truth, Amazon shying away from gaming audiences would be the antithesis of what the streamer has been successful with up until now.
Of course, Fallout has been unashamedly game-y in its design, right down to accurate sets, wild lore swings, and having Bethesda's Todd Howard included every step of the way. The Legend of Vox Machina has been another – albeit from a different source in Critical Role – that has remained faithful to its audience. Another Amazon series, God of War, has been decried in its first look for being too similar to the game, however.
The Mass Effect series, based on BioWare's legendary sci-fi RPG titles, has been confirmed to be set after the games, separate from Commander Shepard's story. Doug Jung is also on board as co-showrunner alongside Casey.
"The writers' room is going strong, and we've got a lot figured out about how it fits within the Mass Effect canon, and where it sits in respect to the new game," Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble wrote in a blog during last year's N7 Day. "The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe's timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy. It won't be a retread of Commander Shepard's story – because after all … that's YOUR story, isn't it?"
