Tales of Grace F confirmed for North American 2012 release, Tales of the Abyss for 3DS also incoming

Namco Bandai has confirmed the arrival of two new Tales games for North American retail: Tales of Graces F for the PS3 and Tales of the Abyss for the 3DS. Alright, so they're new(ish).

Tales of Graces F, slated for 2012,  is the latest of the Tales titles, and represents the first appearance for the series on western PS3s. It stars Asbel Lhant and his ragtag group of fashionable adventures who are caught between a three-way war for global domination. The game is being developed by Namco Tales Studios, and will feature a new battle system that will allow players to swap weapons and switch up their attack strategy on the fly depending on the battle conditions.

Due out later this year, Tales of the Abyss is an updated port of the PS2 entry which, like every other updated port coming for the 3DS, claims to make full use of the handheld's 3D power, as well as offer enhanced duel screen functionality. The game follows the ousted aristocrat Luke fon Fabre who is forced to leave his sheltered life behind and embark on a journey that will ultimately decide the fate of the world.

Check out the equally new(ish) Japanese trailer:

News of the games' western releases broke after Namco Bandai initially confirmed their European arrival at the Level Up event in Dubai. Now that we know both are going global(ish), the true question is do you care?

Can't wait for them. Now, if Tales of Xillia will get an Enlgish release, I will be very happy.

Duel Screens? Will our screens be fighting using 3D powers?

@slimjim There are a whole load of Tales games, stretching back to 8bit - however, finding the ones released in the West is the challenge. Wikipedia is your friend. As for these games, I'm mixed. I will happily sit here and declare Tales of Symphonia a stone-cold classic, a genuinely brilliant game and one of the finest JRPGs ever made, mostly because of how brilliantly it cherry-picked good bits from WRPGs. However, I then shelled out megabucks for Tales of Vesperia, completed it and though, "My God, it's just Tales of Symphonia but with stupidly irritating characters and a story I haven't been able to follow since the first act. What poor game design!" So I think I'll wait for the reviews. That trailer hasn't exactly filled me with hope.

I really need to start on this series. I've heard nothing but good things about it. It started with Symphonia, right? I don't know if i have the money to invest in a new series yet though. I just updated my Castlevania collection by about 10 games, so yeah... Any ideas where to start?

COME ON!!! Really? How hard is it to make the game for the 360 too? I would buy that on day one!
  • Hydrohs - May 12, 2011 8:47 p.m.

It was only a matter of time. Really looking forward to both of these. I wish they'd release the PS3 port of Vesperia over here, I want to play it but don't want to buy a 360 for one game.

Great... Now how about the PS3 version of Vesperia you keep teasing us with?
  • fullmetallegend - May 12, 2011 7:35 p.m.

I loooove the Tales games. Sadly, now that we FINALLY get a PS3 one, it's a port of a Wii game. =[ So now, instead of having another gorgeous Tales game, like Tales of Vesparia, I get an ugly (Well, last gen looking) Wii port. Still, I'm gonna get it and love it.

I've never been able to get into the Tales games because they have such trash presentation. There's no real cutscenes, just this text bubble shit that isn't the least bit compelling. The combat is decent, but if you can't present the story in an interesting way, it's not going to grab me.

I love the Tales series. In my opinion, it is one of the most underrated of all rpg series. It think that Tales deserves as much praise as Final Fantasy.
