Skyrim pre-order bonus is a ‘premium’ map

We’re tired of extra character skins, silly hats, and first crack at some DLC extra that will eventually be available for everyone. That’s why it’s refreshing to hear that Bethesda plans to offer a more classic and classy reward for those who pre-order The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Presenting the Skyrim ‘premium’ map. What makes it so premium? According to Bethesda, this map packed with pre-order copies is printed quality material that feels a lot like burlap.

It sounds like the kind of rough and tumble piece of parchment that could survive the harsh weather of Skyrim. But more importantly, it sounds like the sort of thing that I won’t toss into a dumpster the next time I move, which is my personal gold standard for any worthwhile collectible. Even if you don’t pre-order Skyrim, you’ll receive a printed copy of the in-game map. But those will be printed on the usual run of the mill glossy paper.

Above: A delightful surprise or an utter disappointment? The pre-order bonus for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be a ‘premium’ map

What say you? Do you welcome Bethesda’s more tangible choice for Skyrim's pre-order bonus? Or would you have preferred a more traditional digital bonus, like the extra DLC cases for LA Noire?

You know, I've speant over 500 hours on TES IV Oblivion and I have to say TES V Skyrim will be better, the pre-order bonus may be thought to be "cheap" or a "rip-off" but what else can you expect? Skyrim is so perfect that there is no pre order DLC, the map is pretty much burlap, its not a cheap map, if you want some more bang for your buck get the limited edition like me, it has the dragon and word wall statue with loads of other things. All in all the map is not too bad.

I really like this idea honestly. I could really care less to get some kind of "special" weapon, armor, spell, etc. A nice collector's piece that commemorates my pre-order purchase of Skyrim is a great idea I think. Of course werewolves or killing children may have been a nice piece of exclusive content, but that is for another day...Thanks Bethesda!

Meh, I'd prefer something like a free copy of the PC version, but a nice map'll help the game feel more authentic, although I'm really neutral on it. It doesn't matter to me either way since I'm still preordering it. I really liked what MediaMolecule did with LBP2; you decided what bonus skin you were going to get by choosing where you bought it. I'd like some options.

Great. The one game I pre-ordered this year, and I get a FREAKIN MAP!! I WANT AN OUTFIT NO ONE ELSE CAN HAVE! lol

.... Duh? Except everyone who pre-ordered this game would have the exact same outfit. So... pretty much a few hundred thousand people would also have it. The map will at least be worth something.

Now, I think a burlap-ish map is badass, but I'd prefer a bit more than that, like early or free acres to DLC or a beta invite to a game Bethesda is working on, extra quests, etc.

An Extra weapon, Or Exclusive Armour would be nice but I will idolize the map as if its a real one XD Love the Idea and I'm definitely pre-ordering ^^

Shamrock, for the record my shirt is dry clean only, which means its dirty. More to the point, I can understand why people aren't excited for this since it's not an in-game bonus but personally the map was essential for me when I played Oblivion (and boy, I spent close to 100 hours playing that game) and a proper map has me excited. It sounds a lot better than playing as Robin.

Uhh... It's sounds so horrible, but "pre-order bonus' is always SO TANTALISING to me -.-

This will be hanging up in my room as soon as I get it. I think it is awesome considering we aren't even paying anything extra for it. So, I'm guessing that the map will just get shipped with the game when it is released?

I like this bonus. It's definitely unique, and it won't give unfair advantages like an in-game reward could possibly give. I most likely won't pre-order it though, so I don't really care either way.
  • shamrock77 - June 24, 2011 4:39 a.m.

I wanna hang the map up at my house. Then I wanna stick pins in the locations that I've traveled to. But first I have to travel to the top two corners of the map so it won't fall down
  • InsertWittyNameHere - June 24, 2011 4:10 a.m.

Yes, very nice. A tangible, useful, possibly wall mountable (in frame?!) object. Thank you Bethesda.
  • MercurialForce - June 24, 2011 2:17 a.m.

File this under delightful surprise for me.
  • mikeydo00 - June 24, 2011 1:55 a.m.

Awww I was let down by the headline I thought pre-orders were going to have a better in game map.
  • RupeeLord - June 24, 2011 1:39 a.m.

Pre-order DLC is stupid, since you know I don't have access to it. BUT THIS is actually a good thing. Thank you Bethesda, for this I will pre-order this game asap.
