As of yesterday, everyone who
owns the military FPS Red Orchestra 2 is now entitled to the game’s SDK
(Software Development Kit), so says the ruling party at Tripwire Interactive.
While a limited version of the kit has already been available to “select
modders,” the Georgia-based developer has opened it to the public to spur the
creation of “everything from simple mods and mutators, through custom maps and
on to full total conversion mods.”
Thanks to the pre-release, there
are already three total conversion mods in the works: Rising Storm, In Country Vietnam, and Iron Europe. The mods are set in Guadalcanal,
Vietnam, and 1914 Europe, respectively. The first two have debuted trailers
with striking period soundtracks.
The mod and map-making revolution
has begun. You can grab Red Orchestra 2 on Steam. The SDK is available
through the ‘tools’ tab.
Very exciting but maybe a bit late. I don't doubt the modding community will seize the chance to make a lot of high-quality stuff, though it'll take a lot to get the player base built back up.
