PlayStation Move hack detects the Earth's rotation

Kinect hacks are all the rage these days, but Move is capable of some pretty cool stuff as well. Using little more than a turn table, Linux, and a Move controller, the fellows at pabr.org built a device which can measure the rotation of the Earth. It can even find the geographic north and sense altitude.

The video describes how they made the device in great detail, but the short version is that it measures subtle movement within the Move controller as it spins around on the turntable.

Not that special... Aircraft have been using gyros for this for a long time

But you still, the person who is doing this has to know how the move system processes information so hacking of a Sony product was involved. Personally I dont see the big deal, so long as no one messes with a systems online experience (aka mess with servers and cheat) they should be able to do anything they want with what they have bought.

Interesting as it would be to see Sony sue them and make the whole hacking case so much more interesting, it's not going to happen because these folks never modded the console. If anything, this is publicity for Sony because the console wasn't even required.

Lets hope that Sony does sue these guys. Because Sony believes hackers are the same thing as pirates. (I didn't want to do it, but I know someone was thinking it)
