NOW: In The Wings On A World Stage review

Kevin Spacey’s Old Vic staging of Shakespeare’s Richard III was the hottest of hot tickets and went on to tour the world. Three years on, here is the home video: a backstage record of how the production took shape, complete with rehearsal room footage, luvvie back-slapping and scenic pit-stops at international locales.

Shamelessly partisan, Jeremy Whelehan’s film combines thoughtful pontificating with rather too many tributes to Spacey’s leadership and generosity. Sam Mendes in contrast remains a peculiarly invisible presence, inadvertently suggesting that a theatre director’s role is largely irrelevant once the show is up and running.
