Marvel Universe Online

Are these superheroes on the chopping block?

Jan 14, 2008

What’s going on at Cryptic Studios? Three years ago, they came out of nowhere to deliver City of Heroes, the super-hero MMO that demanded you wear spandex when playing. It had a smart approach to group play (you could rope your low-level friends into your group by making them a sidekick) and comic book panache (punch a goon and he’d fly back a dozen yards).

No wonder they were asked to develop Marvel Universe Online - a licensed MMO that would star such Marvel characters as Spider-Man, the Hulk, Captain America and the X-Men and include playable updates based around the latest comic book storylines. A win-win situation.

Yet the rumour mill is churning, spreading the tale that publishers Microsoft are to cancel the project. Meanwhile, key members of the team have been poached by their former bosses at NCsoft - to set up a new studio that will continue to produce storylines for City of Heroes and Villains, and eventually produce new MMO games based on the series. In 2008, expect to be playing a superhero MMO. But right now, we can’t tell you which one, or from whom.
